Yellow Fever

Yellow fever is a serious and life-threatening infection caused by a virus, which is primarily spread to people through the bite of infected mosquitoes. The virus is found in the tropical areas of Africa, and Central and South America.  The initial symptoms are flu like, and the onset is typically 3-6 days. About 1 in 7 people with the initial symptoms will develop a more severe form of the disease. Among those who develop severe disease, 30-60% die.

There is no medicine to treat yellow fever disease. The best way to prevent the infection is vaccination and protection from mosquito bites. Typically, one dose of the vaccine provides life-long protection against yellow fever. Consult with our travel clinician, preferably 4-6 weeks before travel.
