Dukoral (Cholera and Enterotoxigenic E.Coli)

Dukoral is a traveler’s diarrhea vaccine for adults and children from 2 years of age. This vaccine has two components: Cholera and Enterotoxigenic E. Coli (ETEC). Cholera is a serious bacterial infection that affects the gastrointestinal tract. It is spread through contaminated food and water. Cholera is especially common in areas with poor sanitation, such as Africa and parts of Asia. Symptoms of cholera include nausea, stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea that lead to severe dehydration. The vaccine is advised for people who are travelling to areas where cholera is active.

ETEC on the other hand, is the most common cause of Traveler’s diarrhea worldwide.  ETEC is a bacteria infection spread by eating or drinking contaminated foods or fluids. These bacteria are found in the feces of infected people. Improper hand washing, food preparation and agriculture practices all contribute to the wide spread of traveler’s diarrhea.

Dukoral is an oral vaccine that you take home to drink. Our clinician will advice you on when and how to best take your dose(s).
