Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is a virus that attacks the liver. Symptoms usually last about 3 months and may include fatigue, fever, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice). Fatality rate is about 1 in 200 infected people. The risk is higher if you are 50 years or older. The hepatitis A virus is found in the feces of infected persons. It can be spread through close contact, or contaminated food and water.
Hepatitis A vaccine is the best way to protect against the infection. Hepatitis A has a long incubation period (15-50 days), meaning that even if you get vaccinated up to 1 day before your travel, you are likely to be protected. Consult with our travel clinician to discuss your specific needs and determine the best course of action.
